Had a bunch of boats out the last few days. Even with the fluctuation of the flows the fishing is still very good. Same baetis, worm and leech program is catching fish. A five to nine foot rig with anything from a BB to AB weight seems to be working. Streamer fishing is really starting to pick up with fish transitioning towards the banks with the increased flows.

The current river flow is 3,000 cfs.

We just finished up the 8th Annual Two-Fly Tournament. For those of you who do not know about this special event is consists of approx. 25 two person teams from the oil and gas industry. Team members will not fish together and will fish different stretches of the North Platte River on two different days. Participants must fish with two flies of their own choosing for the entire day; however, different flies may be chosen for day two.

As usual it seemed that everything went smooth and had some nice weather and great fishing, but the best part is the Wyoming Charities that will benefit from everyone’s generosity. This year the recipients were Climb Wyoming, Wyoming Cares and the Platte River Revival. We do not have a total dollar number yet but will everyone posted when we get that figure in.

We had boats out yesterday, and even with the flows being raised to 1600 cfs all our boats came back with great reports. It seems with the higher flows that the baetis activity has slowed down a bit with more leech and midge patterns working better. Our guides have been running anywhere from four to ten feet with an AB or BB weight.

The river is currently at 1800 cfs and should hold at that level for awhile. The Mile is at 1,000 cfs and Fremont Canyon at 500 cfs. We keep you posted on the flows and conditions as they change.

We had boats spread out from the Reef to Town. Everybody is coming back with great reports. The typical nymph rig up top seems to be working with baetis patterns, eggs, and some leeches as well. Some of the guides had a much needed day off and decided to float Bessemer to town and had a pretty silly day of streamer fishing with many browns being brought to the net. Sparkle minnows, and brown leeches seemed to be the hot ticket.

Well today is quite the drastic change from the weather that we have had the last few days, but I guess it was nice to enjoy some very nice rare weather for this time of year.

The fishing has been nothing short of amazing with consistent hatches of baetis just about every day. We have had boats spread all the way from the Mile to Sechrist with the fishing great everywhere. Top bugs have been Barr’s emerger, juju baetis, downey nymph, batwing emerger along with red rock worms and eggs as well. When the bwo’s have been hatching we have run some mini rigs, 4ft to a #4 with great success.

Despite the crazy spring weather that we have encountered the last few days the fishing remains great. We had boats scattered all along the river. Blue wings are starting to make and appearance with the fish starting to key in on them. Midges, leeches eggs and worms are all finding fish as well.

The spring flush is over and the river is in great shape setting us up for another great year of fishing!

Although we all anticipated that we were going to have another year of elevated flows as in years past it appears that we will probably have an average water year. The Bureau of Reclamation released there projected figures for 2012. The Miracle Mile is slated to average 2000 cfs through May, dropping to a 1000 cfs in June. The Grey Reef section is going to 950 cfs in May and raising to 2200 cfs in July. These are all just projections for what the river is slated to run at and can change at any time.

Looking at these figures and seeing how great the fishing is right now we should be on track for a fantastic year of fishing regardless of what the river is going to be flowing at.

Our Spring and Summer trips are filling up fast so call the Ugly Bug and book your next trip with us!

Tight Lines,

Jake

We are starting to see fish moving up on the spawning beds. Please be respectful of these fish and do not bother them.
