UGLY BUG AND CRAZY RAINBOW NEWSLETTER

The excessive amounts of moisture in the Wyoming Mountains have caused concern for many avid fishermen.  At first glance, sportsmen might worry the elevated flow and murky water might make the river unsafe or ruin fishing.  Much of the media attention focusing on the extent of the flows and the possible water damage may serve to intimidate outdoorsmen.

BUT HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS…..FISH LOVE WATER and now there’s a whole bunch more to love!  They still have to eat to maintain the healthy weight they are known for on the Platte River.  In order to survive and flourish, fish still have to find the same holding water they normally would in a regular water year.  Lucky for anglers, the North Platte drifts, forming many bends, turns and islands to interrupt the massive flow of water and creates excellent holding water where fish can feed and find shelter from the heavy current.  The abundance of water has helped to dislodge a smorgasbord of worms, leeches, scuds, crane larva, and other delectable treats for our JUMBO WYOMING TROUT.

SO HOW’S THE FISHING?  When we saw the hefty amounts of moisture being deposited on the mountains this spring, we knew that we were in for a FANTASTIC FISHING SEASON. We have not been disappointed. This season has been nothing short of AMAZING. We are seeing fish up to 25 inches long.  Fish are biting on standard nymph rigs with San Juan worms in red, wine and brown, red rock worms, leeches along with baetis and pale morning dun nymphs have been the patterns of choice.

MORE GOOD FISHING NEWS!  Natrona County Weed and Pest Control is predicting another bumper crop of grasshopper infestation…….Those fish are just going to keep on feasting and growing the rest of the season….COME OUT AND ENJOY SOME OF THE BEST FISHING YOU’LL EVER ENCOUNTER.

Tight lines,
Jake
